Everton could finally sell Jean-Philippe Gbamin this summer amid reports that the club are interested in VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Aster Vranckx.

What is the story?

Patrick Boyland of Athletic recently revealed Gbamin’s loan to CSKA Moscow until the end of the season does not contain a purchase option for the Russian giants, so the Ivory Coast international will return to Goodison Park this summer.

This follows reports that the Toffees are keen to sign 19-year-old starlet Vranckx when the transfer window rolls around, and it’s a move that would surely see Frank Lampard’s side cut ties with Gbamin for good.

Good bye Gbamin

Despite being just 19, Vranckx has been tipped for stardom by those close to him, and it’s clear that after moving from his native Belgium to Wolfsburg he has already impressed those in the hierarchy.

The Bundesliga club’s sporting director, Marcel Schafer, said: “Axel is a very talented player who became a regular in the Mechelen first team at the age of 17, and he can take on different roles in midfield. We are very happy to support its development.

Indeed, Bundesliga.com had this to say about him and his style of play: “A starting player in his debut, Vranckx has the cunning, industry and tenacity of Borussia Dortmund and Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel, but brings a bit more to the table in an attacking sense.

“If Wolfsburg can tap into their fledgling attributes as the club successfully did with Kevin De Bruyne in 2014/15, the Motor City Club could have a handy box-to-box midfielder on his hands.

According to Whoscored, he’s averaging 1.6 tackles and 1.4 shots per game this season in Germany’s top flight Wolfsburg, and it’s that kind of box-to-box instinct that should excite Everton fans. – indeed, the teenager is in the top five for both categories compared to the rest of the team.

With Lampard clearly not a fan of Gbamin and allowing him to leave on loan in January, this summer could be the perfect time for the Toffees to undergo a midfield reset.

Gbamin has played just eight times since leaving Mainz, with a mixture of injuries and poor form seeing him sidelined from first-team action, and becoming something of a financial liability for the club.

Vranckx’s £9million arrival at Goodison Park would finally allow Everton to get rid of Gbamin for good.

Meanwhile, Lampard could find his own Mason Mount at Everton in this academy star…
