School bus in chain reaction collision on Long Island Freeway: PD

RONKONKOMA, NY – A Suffolk Transit school bus with 19 students on board rammed a vehicle that had stopped in traffic on the westbound Long Island Freeway in Ronkonkoma on Wednesday afternoon, Suffolk Police said.

The school bus collided with the vehicle on the west side of the freeway near exit 61 at 3:24 p.m., police said, adding that the accident “caused a chain reaction with two additional vehicles.” No injuries were reported as a result of the crash, police said.

The 77-year-old bus driver was ticketed for traveling too close to the vehicle in front of the bus, police said.

Eastbound and westbound HOV lanes were closed for a period of time while officers responded to the scene, police said. No other details were available.
