Six-car collision on the A12 causes heavy traffic between Witham and Hatfield

A key stretch of the A12 was blocked by traffic today (April 9) following a collision involving multiple cars. Drivers were advised to avoid the area after heavy traffic began to build up following the accident.

Essex Police have since attended the scene after receiving a call reporting an incident involving six vehicles. The road was closed while emergency services handled the situation, causing delays of up to 40 minutes, although some drivers claimed they were stuck in the area for at least an hour.

Police, ambulance and fire and rescue services were on hand during the incident which saw the London-bound carriageway closed between Witham and Hatfield Peverel. A detour route has been put in place to divert traffic after the incident via the B1137.

Essex Police have since issued a statement regarding the incident: “We would like to thank the drivers on the A12 carriageway towards London for their patience. We have been called to report a collision involving six vehicles between Witham and Hatfield Junctions. Peverel just before 1 p.m. today.



Drivers faced long delays

“Fortunately, we do not believe there were any serious injuries. There remain road closures to allow HighwaysEAST to clear debris from the scene, so we are encouraging drivers to use local diversions where possible. We will update the closures as soon as possible.”
