1 dead in collision with multiple cars on I-880 near 66th Avenue

One person died Monday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 880 in Oakland, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The victim’s name was not available early Monday afternoon from the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.

The collision was reported around 3 a.m. when a Toyota RAV4 struck a stopped Honda Civic from behind in a southbound lane near 66th Avenue, CHP officer David Arias said.

The driver of the Honda was outside his car after the accident and another vehicle rammed him and continued on his way. The driver died at the scene and a passenger in his car was seriously injured.

A Nissan swerved to avoid the Honda and overturned, but this driver was not injured. A Toyota Camry hit the Honda and moved to the right shoulder, Arias said. This driver also escaped injury.

Then a Toyota Corolla hit the deceased driver of the Honda. The driver of the Corolla pulled over and was not injured.

Officers made no arrests and alcohol does not appear to have played a role in the collision, Arias said.
