Three people were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Saturday afternoon on GA 17 at Habersham Mill Road. Habersham County E-911 dispatched emergency crews to the scene around 4.18pm after nearby residents called to report the accident.
A Jeep Renegade collided with a Ford F150 pickup truck carrying a mower on a trailer. The impact of the crash sent the truck spinning on the road and the Jeep overturned and rolled down an embankment, according to eyewitness Donn Nelson.
“I saw the green car go through the stop sign and the gold F-150 was going that direction and it was a direct head-on collision,” he said. Nelson and another man rushed to the wreckage. “We turned the car over and kept them conscious until paramedics arrived. I did my best for her,” he said.
Nelson’s wife, Lizz, was sitting with her husband on the porch of their home on Highway 17 and also witnessed the wreckage. She said after the accident that “chaos erupted”.
“Luckily we were able to get there and the paramedics arrived pretty quickly, thank goodness.”
The driver and passenger were trapped inside the Jeep. It took 30 minutes for first responders to extricate them from the wreckage. Habersham County Emergency Services Captain Matt Ruark says he has no details of the extent of their injuries.
Habersham EMS transported the three patients to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. The Georgia State Patrol did not release their names.
Traffic was blocked on Highway 17 in both directions for more than an hour as emergency crews and tow trucks worked to clear the scene. Staff from several agencies in Habersham, Clarkesville and Demorest responded. A Georgia State Patrol Post 7 trooper in Toccoa is investigating the crash.
Now Habersham has contacted GSP for more information. The Post says more information should be available on Sunday. Check back here for updates.
