Eight people were killed and 17 others injured when a high-speed truck collided head-on with an automatic cart at Hasanpally Gate in Yellareddy mandal of Kamareddy district on Sunday evening.
According to the police, the accident happened around 5pm when the hapless car with 25 passengers including the driver was heading towards Pitlam from Yellareddy, and the truck loaded with rice was heading towards Yellareddy from Nizamsagar.
“Obviously the truck driver is at fault. He lost control of the speeding vehicle and collided with the oncoming car,” an officer said.
The impact of the accident was such that the driver of the car and another passenger found themselves sandwiched between the two vehicles. Four other people died while being treated in hospitals in Yellareddy. The police used gas cutters to recover the bodies trapped in the mutilated car.
The victims were identified as Lacchavva (55 years old), Yellaiah, Anjavva, car driver Sailu (30 years old), Eeravva (70 years old), Laxmi (35 years old), Sandrapalli Gangavva (45 years old) and Sayavva.
“The condition of one passenger is critical. Others have been transferred to hospitals in Yellareddy and Banswada,” he said. The victims, all residents of Chillargi near Pitlam, went to the weekly market in Yellareddy to buy supplies for a villager’s funeral and returned. The truck driver fled.
