Afton Man dies after head-on crash in Bear Creek Township

Michigan State Police say an Afton man died after a head-on crash in Bear Creek Township on Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 2:27 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police’s Gaylord Station responded to a fatal crash involving two cars on US-31 near Manvel Road. After their initial investigation, troopers said a 2012 Audi driven by a 50-year-old man from Petoskey was heading north on US-31 in the left-turn lane. A southbound 2012 Chevrolet Impala driven by Harold Reynolds, 77, of Afton, crossed the turning lane.

The Petoskey man couldn’t move his car to avoid the impala and they collided head-on.

According to MSP, Reynolds was pronounced dead at the scene while the Petoskey man was taken to the nearest hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Emmet County EMS, Emmet County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Petoskey Public Safety Department officers.
