Car-train collision kills one

Bartholomew County first responders were called to the second fatal train crash in two days around 5 p.m. Monday.

County Coroner Clayton Nolting confirmed the car-train collision at Indianapolis Road and Lowell Road was a fatal accident. Deputy Coroner Jay Frederick said the driver of the vehicle was killed in the crash and officials were issuing notifications to the family on Monday evening as the investigation continues.

The crossing where the incident was reported at 5:09 p.m. has no flashing lights or a barrier to indicate an approaching train, but the absence of lights and barriers is noted on a road sign yellow on the Indianapolis Road side. . Vehicles approaching the tracks on the other side of the tracks, westbound, where the vehicle was struck by the train, have a stop sign before crossing the tracks, investigators said.

The train was traveling south on the Louisville and Indiana tracks, police said.

Accident reconstructors from the Columbus Police Department were working at the scene Monday night, assisted by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police.

On Sunday afternoon, first responders were dispatched to the Dawson Street and State Road 11 train tracks south of Columbus after Dylan Richard Lonaker, 29, Columbus, was hit by a northbound train as he was walking northbound on the tracks, police said.

Sheriff Matt Myers said investigators are waiting for video of the train before releasing more information about Sunday’s crash.
