GA Insurance will stop providing comprehensive coverage for certain Toyota and Suzuki car models

GA Insurance Limited has said it will no longer provide comprehensive covers for at least six motor vehicle models in Kenya, citing unacceptable policy losses.

Blacklisted car models include Toyota Probox, Toyota Succeed, Toyota Sienta, Toyota Passo, Toyota Porte and all Suzuki models valued under 1 million shillings.

Comprehensive coverage offers compensation for losses resulting from multiple perils, including theft, fire, vandalism and vehicle damage.

The company likely discontinued comprehensive coverages for these models primarily due to their use as utility vehicles as opposed to personal vehicles, in violation of policy requirements. Most often, when a car is used as a PSV, it is prone to accidents because it is constantly on the road, which leads to losses for the insurance company.

The insurer said in a statement: “After a comprehensive review of our private motor portfolio and claims trends, we would like to communicate that there are vehicles which have been misused in use and which have therefore been found to be a challenge when settling claims, so we will not underwrite the models below on a blanket basis to keep business running smoothly and maintain a great customer experience.
