A MAN has died following a collision between two cars on the outskirts of Derry.
The victim died in Altnagelvin Hospital following the accident on Glenshane Road in Drumahoe shortly after 8am yesterday. The man’s Peugeot car was involved in a collision with a Skoda Superb.
A police spokeswoman said the driver of the Skoda was also taken to hospital as a precaution.
“Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or captured what happened on their dash cam to contact the Crash Investigation Unit by calling 101,” she said.
Part of Glenshane Road remained closed throughout the day yesterday with diversions in place.
Yesterday morning, Alliance adviser Philip McKinney, who came to the scene, described the news of the death of one of the victims as “shocking”.
“On behalf of the Alliance, I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of the deceased man,” he said.
Sinn Féin councilor Christopher Jackson also expressed his sympathy and urged all drivers to be careful on the roads.
In a separate development, a pensioner killed in a road accident on the main road from Derry to Letterkenny has been named Mervyn McClure of Lurgy, Letterkenny.
Mr McClure, who was 70, died when his van was involved in a three-vehicle collision between Newtowncunningham and Manorcunningham on Tuesday.
