BACOLOD CITY – A man riding a motorcycle died after being hit by a police patrol car in Barangay Punao, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Wednesday, September 28.
The victim has been identified as Roy Valiente of Escalante City.
San Carlos City Police Chief Lt. Col. Jesus Mesahon Jr. said the patrol car was on its way back to the police station after patrolling the area when the driver, a casual employee hired by the city government, allegedly overtook a tricycle.
However, the driver did not notice that Valiente’s motorcycle was approaching from the opposite lane.
The driver tried to avoid the motorcycle but due to slippery road conditions caused by heavy rain, he was unable to maneuver and hit the victim, Mesahon said.
The patrol car swerved and fell into a channel after the collision, Mesahon added.
Mesahon said the two officers in the patrol car and the driver were unharmed while Valiente was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital.
He specified that the driver is detained at the police station, pending the filing of a complaint or a possible agreement with the family of the victim.
