One dead, two others seriously injured in head-on crash on State Road 40

One person was killed and two others seriously injured in a head-on collision on State Route 40 in Marion County on Friday afternoon.

Shortly after 3:05 p.m., a 29-year-old female from Deltona was traveling westbound on State Road 40 near NE 125th Terrace Road in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, the vehicle was in the westbound lane in a “tight group” with other vehicles.

At the same time, a 2022 Hyundai Kona was heading east on State Highway 40. The FHP report indicated that the two occupants of the vehicle were a 74-year-old male (driver) and a 70-year-old female (passenger), all two from Port Orange.

As the Hyundai Kona approached the location of the Hyundai Elantra, another westbound vehicle on State Highway 40 stopped in the lane and waited to turn left into a private driveway, according to the FHP report.

All other vehicles behind the Hyundai Elantra came to a stop or avoided a collision while moving onto the grassy north shoulder. The FHP report says the Hyundai Elantra quickly approached the stopped vehicles and veered left to avoid a collision.

The Hyundai Elantra pulled into the eastbound lane of State Highway 40 and directly into the path of the Hyundai Kona, resulting in a head-on collision.

Both drivers were taken to a local hospital in serious condition. The Hyundai Kona passenger suffered fatal injuries and died in hospital.

The names of those involved in the accident have not been released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
