Six-car collision on the A19 near Sunderland closes one lane

Part of a major A road in the northeast was closed for several hours this morning after a six-car collision caused chaos on the road and resulted in a 30-minute traffic backlog.

Emergency services were called to the A19 northbound between the A182 (Murton Interchange) and the A690 Durham Road (Herrington Interchange) at around 7am after reports of a multi-vehicle crash .

According to Highways North East, six vehicles were involved in the incident, with one lane of the A19 closed to allow emergency crews to deal with the cars involved.

A Highways North East spokesperson said: “A19 northbound near Seaton between A1018/B1404 and A690. One lane closed due to collision involving six cars. Just under four miles away congestion; about 20 minutes late. DurhamRPU are on scene.”

However, they updated the incident at around 9.30am, saying: “All lanes are now open on the northbound A19 near Seaton, following an earlier collision involving six cars. There is a just under three miles of traffic, which adds 20 minutes to travel times.”

Durham Police and North East Ambulance Service have been contacted for further comment on the incident.
