360 degree sustainable – SIXT adopts a comprehensive program for better climate protection

  • SIXT Board Approves Comprehensive Sustainability Program to Further Accelerate CO2 reduction and demand for smart e-mobility
  • Electrification of 70-90% of the SIXT fleet in Europe by 2030
  • Investment of 50 million euros: the company will significantly expand its own charging infrastructure
  • SIXT integrates strong partners into its ONE platform to provide access to up to 300,000 charging stations in SIXT’s European countries with a single connection and a single app
  • Management will make its branch and site operations climate neutral as early as 2023 (with the inclusion of offset projects) – five years ahead of schedule
  • Alexander Sixt: “At SIXT we believe in innovation, progress, freedom. This also applies to the most pressing issue of our time, climate change. Since every rental of an electric car is a trial chargeable road, SIXT will accelerate enthusiasm for e-mobility.But there is even more at stake: by offering a combination of a wide variety of electric vehicles, easy access to charging infrastructure at scale of the region and the climate neutrality of our company, we want to be the pioneers of a sustainable future.

Pullach, September 20, 2022 – As a technology and innovation leader, SIXT has approved a comprehensive set of measures to inspire even more customers to experience sustainable mobility. The electrification of the fleet, the formation of its own charging infrastructure, the expansion of the SIXT ONE mobility platform into single sign-on for hundreds of thousands of charging points, and even earlier climate neutrality in as a company are at the heart of the integrated and holistic sustainability program.

Electrification: extension of the electric fleet to 70% to 90% in Europe
The share of electrified vehicles (including PHEV and MHEV) in the global SIXT fleet is expected to reach 12-15% by the end of 2023[1]. By 2030, 70-90% of the company’s vehicles in Europe will be electrified, all bookable via the SIXT app. By the end of 2022 alone, SIXT will be able to offer its customers 20 new electric and plug-in models – offering them the widest possible variety: including a range of Audi, Opel, Renault, BMW, Peugeot and Tesla.

SIXT is thus accelerating the craze for e-mobility. A study conducted in collaboration with the market research firm TNS[2] supports this: Around 70% of SIXT customers surveyed responded that using a rental car helps to reduce bookings for e-mobility (in terms of range, charging infrastructure and times charging). Nearly two-thirds consider the use of rental cars a good opportunity to learn about electric vehicles and for more than 55%, the previous use of an electric rental car is important or very important in making a decision to purchase for such a vehicle. In close partnership, SIXT and equipment manufacturers can thus further accelerate the transition to climate-friendly electric mobility.

Charging infrastructure: investments and partnerships
As part of its sustainability program, SIXT had already announced last year that it would invest 50 million euros in its own charging infrastructure in its branches over the next few years. The company thus creates the prerequisites for charging a growing electric fleet after returning the vehicles. Over the coming year and together with partners, SIXT will also offer its customers access to the majority of all publicly accessible charging points in SIXT’s European corporate countries, currently 300,000. This will be done via the new SIXT charge product, which will be integrated into the SIXT app and therefore only requires one registration.

SIXT ONE mobility platform: ecosystem for climate-friendly mobility
The SIXT app and the underlying mobility platform SIXT ONE are already today the hub for simple and flexible use of company mobility services. With car and commercial vehicle rental, car sharing, carpooling and car subscriptions, it combines a number of products that make mobility as sustainable as possible. For example, a single shared vehicle can replace a large number of private cars through optimized use and reduces the amount of parking space needed. New, technologically advanced vehicles, such as those in the SIXT rental fleet, also emit less CO2 than comparatively older vehicles. By integrating SIXT charge into the SIXT ONE platform, the company offers a strong additional incentive for the use of climate-friendly electric vehicles because, in addition to reserving vehicles in a single ecosystem, the application will allow users to find and use charging stations.

Climate neutral: agencies and sites will be CO2 -neutral already by 2023
Beyond a largely electrified fleet for its customers, the company also plans to reduce CO2 emissions generated by operating its own branches and sites as quickly and as far as possible – by installing large-scale photovoltaic systems, for example. What SIXT cannot save locally will be compensated by offset projects. Only projects meeting the highest quality standards will be supported. SIXT will thus make the operation of its branches and sites climate-neutral from the end of 2023 – five years earlier than planned.

“At SIXT, we believe in innovation, progress, freedom.”
Alexander Sixt, Co-CEO of Sixt SE: “At SIXT, we believe in innovation, progress, freedom. This also applies to the most pressing issue of our time, climate change. Since every renting an electric car is a paid test drive, SIXT will accelerate the enthusiasm for e-mobility, but for us the stakes are even higher: by offering a combination of a wide variety of electric vehicles, easy access to charging infrastructure throughout the territory and the climate neutrality of our company, we want to be the pioneers of a sustainable future.”

The announcement of SIXT’s new sustainability program comes just in time for European Mobility Week, which has been launched by the European Commission. During this week, SIXT is making it even easier for its customers to get started with e-mobility by offering numerous special offers since September 16.
