Chase ends in fatal collision on San Mateo Bridge
One died on the San Mateo Bridge after a lengthy chase Wednesday morning that ended with the suspect being hit by a vehicle while on foot, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Redwood City tweeted about a fatal collision at 5:48 a.m.
The suspect was involved in a pursuit with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in Half Moon Bay early Wednesday before deputies lost track of the suspect’s vehicle on I-280 near Black Mountain.

According to CHP, the San Mateo Police Department found the vehicle on Highway 92 eastbound before losing it again near Edgewater. Moments later, officers responded to a call about an accident involving a pedestrian on the San Mateo Bridge, with the description of the victim matching that of the suspect being pursued. The suspect’s vehicle was also in sight, the CHP said.
According to CHP, the suspect’s vehicle may have run out of gas, causing him to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot before being struck by a passing vehicle. The suspect was killed following the collision.
Update: It appears the Ford ran out of gas, the suspect left the Ford to continue on foot and was struck by a passing vehicle. The chase ended short of the San Mateo Bridge when the San Mateo PD lost visual near Edgewater.

One lane of SR-92 eastbound is currently closed. No other injuries were reported.
CHP Redwood City, the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office and the San Mateo Police Department were unable to comment.
